Garuda Indonesia to Change Free Baggage Rules from 1 September 2026, Moving Away from Weight-Based Calculation

PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk will implement changes to its free baggage allowance provisions by shifting the calculation system from a weight concept to a piece concept. The new policy will take effect on 1 September 2026. The change applies to all Garuda Indonesia tickets purchased or issued from that date. Under the new system, baggage capacity will no longer be calculated based on total weight, but rather on the number of suitcases or items each passenger can register. Garuda Indonesia stated that the policy establishes a new basis for calculating Free Baggage Allowance for all passengers on flights operated by the airline. Through the piece concept, each ticket will include information on the number of suitcases a passenger may bring, along with the maximum weight limit for each suitcase. The airline believes this system will make baggage capacity information clearer, more definite, and easier to understand before departure. The clarity is expected to help passengers prepare their belongings according to the applicable provisions, thereby minimising potential issues during the check-in process. The policy applies to all flights operated by Garuda Indonesia as part of its service updates for passengers.
