Garuda Indonesia is changing its baggage service for passengers according to route and flight class. The change is based on a piece concept that provides additional baggage allowance of up to 64 kilograms.

Garuda Indonesia’s Director of Transformation, Neil Raymond Mills, said the rules apply to tickets issued from 1 September 2026. “The implementation of the piece concept is part of Garuda Indonesia’s transformation to modernise services while providing greater certainty for passengers. With clearer provisions on the number of pieces and maximum weight, customers can prepare their belongings more easily,” Mills said, as quoted by Antara on Monday, 13 July 2026.

Under the scheme, Garuda provides certainty on the number and maximum weight of each checked bag. It also aims to increase benefits for customers with a larger baggage allowance compared with previous provisions.

He said that customers holding tickets issued before 1 September 2026 will continue to follow the baggage provisions listed on their tickets, including if their travel takes place after the piece concept comes into effect.

On domestic flights, Economy class passengers receive an allowance of one checked bag with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms. Meanwhile, Business and First Class passengers receive an allowance of two pieces with a maximum weight of 32 kilograms each, or a total of up to 64 kilograms.

For international flights, Economy class passengers receive two pieces with a maximum weight of 23 kilograms each, or a total of 46 kilograms. Business and First Class passengers receive two pieces with a maximum weight of 32 kilograms each, or a total of up to 64 kilograms.

Compared with the previous scheme, the piece concept brings increased baggage allowances across various flight segments. According to Mills, on domestic flights the Economy class allowance rises from 20 kilograms to 23 kilograms, Business class from 30 kilograms to 64 kilograms, and First Class from 40 kilograms to 64 kilograms.

On international flights, the Economy class baggage allowance rises from 30 kilograms to 46 kilograms, Business class from 40 kilograms to 64 kilograms, and First Class from 50 kilograms to 64 kilograms.

With these changes, customers can receive an additional total baggage allowance of up to 34 kilograms compared with the previous provisions, while still observing the limits on the number of pieces and the maximum weight of each piece.

Neil said the scheme also reflects Garuda Indonesia’s efforts to improve service consistency across its domestic and international flight networks. “The piece concept is widely used in the global aviation industry. Its implementation at Garuda Indonesia is expected to strengthen service standardisation, support smoother baggage handling, and provide greater certainty for customers, including when connecting to international flight networks,” Neil said.
