Garuda Indonesia Introduces New Baggage Rules, Passengers Can Get Up to 64 Kg Allowance

National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is continuing to strengthen its service transformation and modernisation through the implementation of a new checked baggage scheme based on the number of pieces, known as the Piece Concept. The provision applies to tickets issued on or after 1 September 2026 for travel on or after that date. Passengers holding tickets issued before 1 September 2026 will continue to follow the baggage rules stated on their ticket, even if their journey takes place on or after the implementation date.

Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills said the implementation of the Piece Concept is part of the company’s commitment to delivering a more modern, consistent, transparent, and easy-to-understand travel experience. "The implementation of the Piece Concept is part of Garuda Indonesia’s transformation in modernising services while providing better certainty for passengers. With clearer provisions on the number of pieces and maximum weight, passengers can prepare their luggage more easily, from the travel planning stage to departure," Neil explained.

For domestic flights, Economy Class passengers are entitled to one piece of checked baggage with a maximum weight of 23 kilogrammes. Meanwhile, Business Class and First Class passengers receive an allocation of two pieces, each with a maximum weight of 32 kilogrammes, or a total of up to 64 kilogrammes. On international flights, Economy Class passengers are allocated two pieces with a maximum weight of 23 kilogrammes each, totalling 46 kilogrammes. Business Class and First Class passengers receive two pieces with a maximum weight of 32 kilogrammes each, or a total of up to 64 kilogrammes.

The implementation of the Piece Concept marks an important milestone in the ongoing transformation of Garuda Indonesia’s services. Through this scheme, the previous checked baggage rules, which were based on total weight, have been adjusted to a system based on the number of pieces and the maximum weight per piece. This modernisation provides greater transparency and certainty for passengers when planning their luggage, while also offering increased value through checked baggage allowances of up to two pieces with a maximum weight of 32 kilogrammes each, or a total of up to 64 kilogrammes, depending on the route, class of service, and ticket category.
