National flag carrier Garuda Indonesia is continuing to strengthen its service transformation through the implementation of a piece concept scheme for checked baggage. The new provisions offer additional baggage allowances of up to 64 kilogrammes for passengers, depending on the route and class of travel.

Garuda Indonesia Director of Transformation Neil Raymond Mills stated that the new policy applies to tickets issued from 1 September 2026, for travel on or after that date. “The implementation of the Piece Concept is part of Garuda Indonesia’s transformation to modernise services while providing better certainty for passengers,” Mills said in a statement on Monday, 13 July 2026. “With clearer provisions on the number of pieces and maximum weight, passengers can prepare their luggage more easily, from the trip planning stage through to departure.”

Through this scheme, Mills explained that the airline provides certainty on the number and maximum weight of each checked baggage piece, while enhancing benefits for passengers with a larger baggage allocation compared to previous provisions. He noted that passengers holding tickets issued before 1 September 2026 will continue to follow the baggage provisions stated on their tickets, even if their travel schedule occurs after the Piece Concept takes effect.

On domestic flights, economy class passengers receive an allocation of one piece of checked baggage with a maximum weight of 23 kg. Meanwhile, business and first-class passengers receive an allocation of two pieces, each with a maximum weight of 32 kg, or up to 64 kg in total. For international flights, economy class passengers receive an allocation of two pieces with a maximum weight of 23 kg each, totalling 46 kg. Business and first-class passengers receive two pieces, each with a maximum weight of 32 kg, or up to 64 kg in total.

Compared to the previous scheme, the implementation of the Piece Concept delivers increased baggage allocations across various flight segments. On domestic flights, economy class baggage allocation increases from 20 kg to 23 kg, business class from 30 kg to 64 kg, and first class from 40 kg to 64 kg. On international flights, economy class baggage allocation increases from 30 kg to 46 kg, business class from 40 kg to 64 kg, and first class from 50 kg to 64 kg.
