Garuda Calling: Six Players Excluded From Herdman's Indonesia National Team Selection
Several players who were previously key figures for the Indonesian national team have been excluded by coach John Herdman from the squad for the 2026 FIFA Series preparation. Two of them are absent due to FIFA sanctions. New Indonesia national team coach John Herdman has released a list of 41 players who will be prepared for the 2026 FIFA Series tournament. The tournament is scheduled to take place at the Bung Karno Stadium in Senayan, Jakarta on 27 and 30 March. In addition to Indonesia, three other teams will participate: Bulgaria, Solomon Islands, and Saint Kitts & Nevis. At the same time, Bulgaria will face Solomon Islands at 15:30 WIB. The winners of both matches will meet in the final on Monday, 30 March 2026, at 20:00 WIB. The losing teams will compete for third place at 15:30 WIB on the same day. However, Herdman did not include Shayne Pattynama, Thom Haye, and Marselino Ferdinan in the squad. Shayne Pattynama and Thom Haye were previously part of the squad in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers held in November 2025, when the Indonesia national team was still managed by Patrick Kluivert. In that round, the Indonesian national team suffered defeats of 0-1 against Iraq and 2-3 against Saudi Arabia. The reason Shayne Pattynama and Thom Haye were not called up is due to FIFA sanctions. Both are prohibited from playing in four matches for the Indonesian national team. The sanctions were imposed because of unsporting conduct by Thom Haye and Pattynama towards the referee during a match against Iraq in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers for the Asian zone. Meanwhile, Marselino Ferdinan was also not selected for the Indonesia national team squad on this occasion.
