PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero) Tbk. (GIAA) is collaborating with PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (Persero), or InJourney, to increase international tourist arrivals through the ‘Discover More Indonesia’ programme.

Garuda’s Group Head of Marketing, Prina Eka Putri, explained that under this programme, foreign tourists who purchase international route tickets to Indonesia will receive free domestic flight tickets (free add-on flights) to various tourist destinations across the country.

“Our challenge is no longer just how to bring more international travellers to Indonesia,” she said at the Sarinah building in Jakarta on Tuesday (11/8/2026).

Prina revealed that through this programme, the airline can increase aircraft occupancy while also boosting Indonesia’s tourism ecosystem. “How one arrival does not just stop at one point, but can also develop into a journey to a second and possibly third destination,” she said.

However, Prina noted that international tickets with free flight bonuses to other regional destinations are limited. Garuda is only providing 170,845 tickets. The number of free domestic tickets is aligned with the spirit of Indonesia’s Independence Day.

“This figure of 170,845 is indeed to commemorate that this month is the month of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence, 17 August 1945, when we became free,” she explained.

Prina said the free domestic ticket programme is open for flight periods from early August until 30 November 2026 through all Garuda ticket purchase channels. It is hoped that the programme will have an impact on the national tourism industry, including encouraging visits to more regions, increasing hotel occupancy, and supporting SMEs and other tourism sectors.

On the same occasion, InJourney’s Senior Vice President Corporate Secretary, Yudhistira Setiawan, said that improving the economy in the tourism sector cannot be measured solely by the number of tourists arriving. The length of stay of foreign tourists, the number of destinations visited, and the amount of tourist spending are also important indicators.

He noted that average foreign tourist spending in the second quarter of 2024 reached around US$1,285 with an average length of stay of 10 nights. The free domestic add-on flight programme is specifically intended to encourage foreign tourists to holiday longer while boosting tourist activity and spending in the regions.

“What we see as more important is how long they stay in Indonesia? Then how many destinations are visited? And of course how much they spend at those destinations,” he concluded.
