Garuda aborts takeoff in Tokyo

TOKYO (AP): A Garuda Indonesia jumbo jet bound for the resort
island of Bali aborted its departure from Tokyo's main
international airport Saturday after the pilot detected engine
trouble, an airport spokesman said.

None of the 397 passengers or 18 crew members reported
injuries.

Problems with one of the Boeing 747's four engines caused the
pilot of Garuda Flight 881 to abandon takeoff after the plane
started down the runway at the New Tokyo International Airport in
Narita, said spokesman Shinichi Hayase.

Narita is located 65 kilometers (40 miles) northeast of Tokyo.

The plane turned off onto a taxiway and shut down its engines.
It was then towed into a hangar for inspection by maintenance
workers, Hayase said.

The plane's departure for Bali was rescheduled for around 9
p.m. (1200 GMT) Saturday pending an inspection, he said.

In 1996, a Garuda DC-10 crashed seconds after takeoff from an
airport in southwestern Japan, killing three people and injuring
about 100.
