Garment workers strike

UNGARAN, Central Java: Some 1,200 workers at PT Cerah Garment Perkasa went on strike yesterday demanding increased wages and other benefits.

The police managed to keep the strikers under control after the protesters became emotional when they learned the management had not shown up.

Salatiga Police Chief Lt. Col. Hery Suprapto arrived at the scene in time to arrange negotiations between the workers and management.

The workers won various concessions from the talks, including improvement in their allowances and the establishment of a union representative. (har)
