Garment workers get bonus

BOGOR (JP): At least 2,000 workers of PT Busana Perkasa Garment staged a demonstration on Wednesday, demanding bonus payments which were promised by the company.

The protest ended peacefully four hours later when management promised to give bonuses amounting to half of the workers' monthly earnings.

Susanti, an assistant supervisor, said the workers' union repeatedly demanded the management make good on its promise.

"The company's failure to keep its promise led to widespread agreement among the workers to stage this demonstration," she said.

Seno, head of the company's human resources department, said management was unable to meet the demand because of falling revenue. He denied accusations that high-ranking employees had received the bonus. (21/06)
