Garlic Prices Soar Across Indonesia, Surpassing Government Reference Price
The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) has highlighted a widening increase in garlic prices across various regions in the third week of July 2026. Although the national average price rise remains limited, the number of districts and cities experiencing an increase in the Price Development Index (IPH) continues to grow.
Deputy for Distribution and Services Statistics at BPS, Ateng Hartono, stated that the national average garlic price reached approximately Rp42,561 per kilogram, a 4.94% increase compared to June 2026. ‘Garlic has seen a very high jump since May, even relatively far above its Sales Reference Price (HAP). The HAP for garlic is Rp38,000 per kg, whereas in the third week of July the price reached Rp42,561 per kg. This means there is a gap of about 12%,’ Ateng said during a Regional Inflation Control Coordination Meeting on Monday.
Ateng explained that the price increase is becoming more widespread. The number of districts/cities with a rising garlic IPH increased from 251 areas in the fourth week of June to 263 areas in the first week of July, rising again to 269 areas in the second week, and reaching 271 areas in the third week of July 2026. BPS also noted that 75.28% of Indonesian regions experienced a garlic IPH increase, with the highest price recorded at Rp100,000 per kg in Intan Jaya Regency, Puncak Regency, and Pegunungan Bintang Regency.
Meanwhile, Senior Trade Analyst at the Ministry of Trade, Neni Dwi Prehati, reported that based on the ministry’s monitoring up to 17 July 2026, the national average garlic price was recorded at Rp38,858 per kg, a slight 0.6% increase from the previous month. She noted that while prices in non-Maluku and Papua regions were slightly below the government’s reference price of Rp38,000 per kg, prices in Maluku and Papua remained significantly higher, at 60.07% above the reference price of Rp40,000 per kg for those regions.
To suppress prices in eastern Indonesia, the Ministry of Trade is continuing to coordinate with various parties, particularly in the field of foreign trade, regarding the possibility of adding entry ports in the eastern region.
In contrast to garlic, BPS recorded that shallot prices have begun to ease. The national average shallot price in the third week of July 2026 was around Rp43,859 per kg, a 12.05% decrease compared to June 2026. Chilli prices also fell, with red chilli dropping 11.65% to an average of Rp48,526 per kg and bird’s eye chilli falling 15.71% to an average of Rp57,806 per kg.
