Garbage Truck Suddenly Catches Fire En Route to Suwung Landfill

A garbage collection truck caught fire while passing through Jalan Bypass Ngurah Rai, specifically in front of Prima Jaya Stone, Kesiman Petilan Village, East Denpasar, on Tuesday (9/16/2026) at approximately 06:00 WITA. The truck was en route to the Suwung Landfill (TPA).

Fortunately, there were no casualties in the incident. The flames only consumed the pile of waste inside the truck’s container, preventing any injuries or more extensive damage.

Denpasar Police Public Relations Chief, Iptu I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya, stated that the fire was suspected to have been triggered by an electrical short circuit within the vehicle. “The incident occurred around 06:00 WITA. The driver, who was travelling to the Suwung Landfill, felt the rear of the vehicle becoming hot. After stopping and inspecting the vehicle, it was discovered that the pile of waste in the truck’s container was burning and emitting flames,” he said.

The green Hino truck, bearing registration number DK 9534 MD, was driven by Iyan (43). According to his account, he attempted to extinguish the fire using available water nearby. However, the flames continued to grow, necessitating assistance from the fire department.

A local resident named Sunarji, who was in the vicinity, also assisted in the firefighting efforts after hearing cries for help. Alongside other residents, he used buckets of water to combat the blaze, but smoke and flames continued to emerge from the truck’s container.

Firefighters deployed two fire engines and one rescue unit to manage the incident until the fire was successfully extinguished.

“Based on the field handling, there were no casualties. The vehicle owner did not file an official report as only the pile of waste in the truck’s container was burnt. However, the vehicle’s registration document (STNK) was destroyed in the incident,” he explained.

Police have advised transport drivers to routinely inspect the electrical and engine conditions of their vehicles before operation to prevent similar incidents, particularly for vehicles transporting flammable materials.
