Gang of Thieves Posing as Sales Representatives Steal 30 Grams of Gold and Cash from Elderly Woman in Klaten
A gang of thieves operating in Borongan Village, Polanharjo District, Klaten, Central Java, was apprehended by Klaten Police on 9 March 2026. Four suspects were arrested, whilst one remains at large on the wanted persons list.
The theft resulted in losses of approximately 40 million rupiah for the victim, Sabiyem (80), a farmer from Borongan Village. The losses comprised 10 million rupiah in cash and 30 grams of gold jewellery.
The case of aggravated theft committed collectively was revealed by Klaten Police Chief AKB Moh Faruk Rozi at a press conference at Klaten Police Headquarters on Friday, 13 March.
The theft occurred on 9 March when the victim was on her house terrace. The suspects suddenly arrived in a red Honda Brio Satya vehicle with registration plate AD 1770 ZK. Three suspects—AS, Am, and L—approached the victim, offering liquefied petroleum gas assistance and gold gifts. However, L slipped into the house under the pretext of using the bathroom.
During this opportunity, L opened the victim’s cabinet, stealing 10 million rupiah in cash and 30 grams of gold jewellery stored inside. The suspects then hastily left the house.
Shortly after the suspects’ departure, the victim noticed something amiss with the unexpected visitors. She was shocked to discover that money and a ring from her cabinet had disappeared.
Police Chief Faruk Rozi explained that following the report lodged by victim Sabiyem at Polanharjo Police Station, the Klaten Police Criminal Investigation Unit immediately launched an investigation and successfully apprehended four suspects: AS, Am, Ag, and DP. Suspect L remains on the wanted persons list.
Seized evidence included the red Honda Brio vehicle with registration AD 1770 ZK registered under the name Ratna Sari Nurhidayati, one Lascada t-shirt, Nike shoes, and four receipts for gold jewellery purchases.
The suspects were charged under Article 477 paragraph (1) letter G of Law No. 1 of 2023 concerning the Criminal Code, carrying a maximum prison sentence of seven years or fines in accordance with applicable provisions.
