Gang of armed robbers captured

JAKARTA: City Police chief of detectives Sr. Comr. Mathius
Salempang announced on Friday that police had arrested three
members of a gang of armed robbers, known to have committed
robbery in the city. Three other gang members were still at
large.

The three arrested suspects are Heri Yulianto, alias Hendrik,
45, Agusman, alias Ujang, 45, and Ibrahim, 31, while the escapees
are Udin, Salim and Empe.

Heri, leader of the gang, was shot five times in the legs when
he tried to escape from detectives trying to arrest him on Sept.
16 in Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. Agusman was arrested in Tanjung
Priok, North Jakarta, while Ibrahim was apprehended in Tegal
Alur, West Jakarta, the same day.

Mathius said that the gang had committed many robberies across
the city.

On Jan. 30, the gang robbed a jewelry shop on Jl. Wijaya IV,
Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, and took jewelry worth Rp 750
million (US$88235.30).

The next month, the gang stole a silver Toyota Soluna sedan in
Cideng, Central Jakarta, and in March robbed a house in Kelapa
Gading, North Jakarta, stealing Rp 2 million in cash.

The gang was also involved in other robberies last November in
Srengseng Sawah, West Jakarta; Grogol, West Jakarta; and in
Kemayoran, Central Jakarta. -- JP
