Gandhi School boss stabbed
JAKARTA (JP): Police are still questioning a 24-year-old man believed to have stabbed and attempted to rob an executive of the Gandhi Memorial School in Pasar Baru, Central Jakarta, on Sunday.
City Police Spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said yesterday that Raja Jeager, 70, an Indonesian of Indian origin, the school's principal, was attacked in his home on Jl. Petak Arab, in Sawah Besar district, Central Jakarta.
He said the suspect, identified as Khairul Anam, of Jl. Gunung Sahari in Sawah Besar, came to Jeager's house at about 2:30 p.m.
"The suspect told the school headmaster, who opened the door himself, that he wanted to learn English from him," Aritonang said.
When Jeager ignored listening to the guest's demand, the man suddenly pulled out a knife and pointed it at Jeager's stomach.
Jeager told police later that he was able to push and kick the knife-weilder, making him fall.
However, Jeager was stabbed in the stomach when he tried to help the man stand up.
Aritonang said that soon after Jeager shouted for help, local residents came and captured the suspect.
The residents beat Khairul before taking him to the nearby Sawah Besar Police subprecinct.
Other residents rushed the wounded headmaster to the Husada Hospital in West Jakarta, said Aritonang. (jun)
