'Gamelan' taught in Canadian schools

NEW YORK: Traditional Javanese gamelan music will be included
in the education curriculum of primary and secondary schools in
Toronto, Canada, said an Indonesian diplomat.

Sylvia Shirley, acting consul-general in Toronto, said on
Sunday the move followed efforts by Jakarta's representative
office in Toronto to introduce Indonesia's cultural arts among
local citizens.

"With such an inclusion in the curriculum, students are
expected to have a wider opportunity to learn Indonesian cultural
arts," she said.

She said gamelan is considered part of the international
projects there under the name of 'Music of the World'. -- Antara
