The government has officially prepared a major step to transform Gambir Station within the next two years. The station, which has long been an icon of long-distance train travel in Jakarta, will undergo a total renovation to assume a new status as a more modern and integrated ‘National Station’.

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) President Director, Bobby Rasyidin, revealed that this redevelopment plan has become a government priority agenda. The target is for the public to see a much cooler and more functional new face of Gambir Station within two years.

One crucial point in this renovation is the return of KRL Commuterline services at Gambir Station. This integration aims to strengthen intermodal connectivity in the heart of the capital, making it easier for long-distance train passengers to transfer directly to commuter transport modes.

Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi emphasised that although it will serve KRL, Gambir Station will not change its function to solely a commuter station. ‘It is not (just a KRL station). It will become a national station, our National Station,’ said Dudy at the Presidential Palace on Thursday (11/6).

Beyond discussing the station’s aesthetics and integration, the meeting between KAI leadership, the Minister of Transportation, and President Prabowo Subianto also highlighted railway travel safety aspects. The government is pushing for the acceleration of handling level crossings, which have been accident-prone points.

Based on the latest data reported by PT KAI, the national progress on handling level crossings shows specific focus in Jakarta and the Greater Jakarta area, where there are 166 level crossing points. This measure is taken in line with efforts to modernise national railway infrastructure, prioritising the safety of road users and the smooth operation of train journeys.
