Gambir Station Set for Renovation, Will Serve Commuter Line Passengers
Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi has revealed the development plans for the renovation of Gambir Station. In the future, Gambir Station will not only serve long-distance train journeys but also Commuter Line or KRL passengers. “Yes, the plan is like that (boarding and alighting KRL),” Dudy said at the Parliament Complex, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Wednesday, 17 June 2026. Dudy assured that the renovation plan will not make Gambir Station more crowded. He said that long-distance train and KRL services will operate side by side. “It won’t be crowded. We see that the land can still meet the capacity. Of course, we will adjust it to the capacity, whether all Commuter services will be there,” he said. Regarding the budget, Dudy stated that it does not come from the Ministry of Transportation. The funding for the Gambir Station renovation will come from PT KAI. “From KAI,” Dudy concluded. Previously, President Prabowo Subianto received Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi together with the President Director of PT Kereta Api Indonesia Bobby Rasyidi at the Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Thursday, 11 June 2026. The meeting discussed a number of national railway sector development agendas, ranging from station modernisation to improving railway travel safety. Bobby explained that President Prabowo gave directions to immediately realise the renovation of Gambir Station as one of the strategic transportation hubs in Jakarta. The renovation is targeted for completion within approximately two years with a concept of better intermodal integration. “One Gambir. Gambir will be renovated. In two years, we will have a Gambir that (thumbs up). We will integrate it with the KRL,” Bobby said on Thursday, 11 June 2026. In addition to the development of Gambir Station, Bobby also reported to the Head of State regarding the acceleration of handling level crossings to improve safety for train travel and road users. KAI reported that to date, 172 level crossings have been closed and 490 other crossings are currently in the process of being addressed. “We updated him on the level crossings, that we are in rapid progress for these level crossings. Moreover, many level crossings have been closed, 172 have been closed, 490 are on progress to be closed. The remaining 1,148 have already begun the process for crossing gates,” Bobby added.
