Gamalama quiet after eruption

BANDUNG: Mount Gamalama in Ternate, northern Maluku, was quiet yesterday after spewing ash some 2,000 meters into the sky and emitting tremors on Saturday night, official said.

The eruption blanketed Ternate with volcanic ash and blackened parts of the town with soot, but spared the airport, Syamsul Rizal, head of the Volcanology Office for the Sulawesi and Maluku regions, was quoted by the Antara news agency as saying.

There have been no reports of casualties or injuries and the total loss is yet to be estimated.

Saturday's eruption marked the climax of the volcano's activities which had been going on for more than a month.(pwn)
