GAM inmate dies in Malang hospital

BANDA ACEH, Aceh: The body of Free Aceh Movement (GAM) prisoner Teungku Thaharuddin bin Bahar, 58, arrived in Banda Aceh on Sunday from Lowokwaru Penitentiary in Malang, East Java.

His family lamented the prison's treatment of the inmate before his death on Saturday at a hospital in Malang.

"According to my sister (Teungku's wife) and his children, Teungku had remained handcuffed despite his condition, similar to what happened when he was flown from Aceh," Zulkifli, Teungku's brother-in-law, told The Jakarta Post.

He said Teungku, who was jailed for seven years for his role in separatist activities, had suffered from a heart condition, diabetes and a kidney disease. --JP
