Gallon-load water truck overturns on Swatantra V Street, Bekasi; traffic jams extend up to 2 km
BEKASI, KOMPAS.com – A truck loaded with mineral-water gallons overturned after a single-vehicle crash on Swatantra V Street, Jatirasa Village, Jatiasih District, Bekasi City, on Thursday 5 March 2026 at 05:30 WIB.
Based on Kompas.com’s observations at the scene, the traffic congestion stretched to about two kilometres since early morning.
The congestion was worsened by road and drainage repair works that left the carriageway passable on only one side.
A system of alternating open and closed lanes was implemented to manage traffic.
‘I was passing along that road and it was congested because there was an overturned truck. Because the road boundary that has been built is only half complete, vehicles were piling up at a single point,’ said Hidayat, a Jatirasa resident, to Kompas.com on Thursday.
The subsidence of the road surface is thought to have caused vehicles to lose balance and overturn.
‘Maybe the truck was in a blind spot or not visible, and it sank into that U‑ditch on which the truck was resting,’ said Hidayat.
He said that congestion on Jalan Swatantra V has often occurred since the repair project began.
The implementation of the open/close system has lengthened the queues, especially as the corridor is also used by heavy vehicles and Transjakarta buses.
‘Even without reversal, it is already congested because of the open/close system. So the congestion along Jalan Swatantra towards Pekayon or Komsen is even longer,’ he said.
Hidayat added that the truck driver sustained minor injuries. Fortunately, the owner of the stall affected by the incident was not present at the scene at the time.
The truck’s body briefly brushed against the stall building along the roadside due to its proximity to a drainage channel.
At the scene, police and the Department of Transportation were seen enforcing the open/close traffic system to ease congestion.
As of around 09:00 WIB, the process of evacuating the truck’s body was still underway.
Joint officers also moved the mineral-water gallons from the truck to restore traffic flow on Jalan Swatantra V to normal.
