Gaining New Experience, Radak Primary School Pupils Learn Microsoft Word with BSI Explore
Fifth and sixth grade pupils of SDN 23 Terentang in Radak Baru village gained new experience with technology through a Microsoft Word lesson held as part of BSI Explore 2026 by Universitas Bina Sarana Informatika (UBSI) Pontianak Campus on Thursday (13/8/2026).
The activity featured Lady Agustin Fitriana as the speaker, who provided a basic introduction to using Microsoft Word. The pupils were introduced to various fundamental functions of the word processing application, from typing and tidying up text to inserting images into documents.
During the session, BSI Explore students accompanied the pupils so they could practise the material directly. Siti Hafizah, a member of BSI Explore 2026, explained that the activity was designed to give pupils basic experience in using Microsoft Word.
According to her, some pupils were still unfamiliar with Microsoft Word and did not yet understand the basic concept of digital documents.
“During the activity, we saw that some pupils were indeed not familiar with Microsoft Word. Some were even still asking what a document is and how to create one using a computer,” she said.
She explained that the learning was therefore carried out in stages and using simple language so that the material would be easier for primary school pupils to understand.
“We started from the most basic things, such as how to type, delete text, tidy up writing, and insert images. After that, the students accompanied them directly as they tried it themselves,” she explained.
Lady, as the speaker, said that introducing Microsoft Word to primary school pupils is an initial step towards building their understanding of technology use.
“The main aim of this activity is not to make them immediately proficient in using Microsoft Word, but to provide experience and introduce the fact that computers can be used to create documents and assist with various learning activities,” said Lady.
According to her, practice-based learning is one of the effective ways to introduce technology to pupils.
“The children looked more enthusiastic when they tried it directly. They learned by typing themselves, seeing the results of their writing, then trying to insert images and tidy up the document. From there they began to understand the function of Microsoft Word,” she added.
The activity also received support from BSI Explore students who accompanied the pupils throughout the learning process. The assistance was provided directly to help pupils who still had difficulty using computers.
Through this activity, BSI Explore 2026 is not only a community service programme, but also a space for introducing digital skills to children in Radak Baru village.
From learning what a document is to trying to type and insert images, the pupils gained new experience in using technology as part of the learning process.
