Gaikindo optimistic automotive sales will continue to grow in 2026
Secretary General of the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo) Kukuh Kumara is optimistic that the national automotive market will continue to grow in 2026 despite various economic challenges, including the rupiah’s depreciation.
"We must remain optimistic. Looking at the figures up to April, they are still positive. Despite various reports, the sales figures remain positive," said Kukuh Kumara to media in Jakarta on Tuesday.
He added that the positive momentum seen in April 2026 must be maintained to preserve consumer purchasing power for vehicles and ensure continued growth of the national automotive industry.
According to the association, the automotive industry has a multiplier effect on the national economy due to its extensive industrial chain, from vehicle manufacturing, components, to supporting sectors.
"Once the automotive industry has buyers, the industry spins. Whether passenger or commercial vehicles, especially those produced domestically," he said.
Therefore, he believes that despite the rupiah facing pressure against the US dollar, Gaikindo considers automotive industry players will not rush to increase vehicle prices.
Manufacturers are said to still consider many factors before making price adjustment decisions, including vehicle stock levels, components, and long-term raw material purchase commitments.
Gaikindo also cautioned that a rapid price increase could prompt consumers to delay purchases. If this happens, industry sales could slow as existing stock at manufacturers and dealers remains substantial.
Gaikindo itself has not set specific sales targets for this year. However, they hope market performance will improve compared to 2025.
This optimism is expected to strengthen with the introduction of new products and automotive exhibitions that attract public interest.
Modern automotive technologies such as AI-based vehicles, autonomous driving systems, and sustainable mobility solutions will be the main focus.
As of May 2026, over 60 vehicle brands have confirmed participation in the event, supported by hundreds of supporting automotive industry brands.
Organisers are optimistic that the expanding scale of GIIAS will create greater opportunities for the growth of the national automotive industry and boost public enthusiasm for future vehicle technologies.
This year, six new brands will participate in the exhibition, scheduled to take place from 30 July to 9 August 2026 at the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE) BSD City, Tangerang.
