BEIJING, KOMPAS.com - GAC Indonesia has confirmed it will introduce a premium MPV for the domestic market, namely the GAC E9. This model is positioned to compete in the upper segment, which has previously been occupied by various luxury MPVs. However, interestingly, the E9 name is no longer used in the Chinese market. In its latest version, the model now uses the name M8. Iqbal Taufiqurrahman, Product Planning and Strategy at GAC Indonesia, explained that initially, the E9 and M8 were clearly differentiated in terms of technology and product positioning. “So, the E9 and M8 in China before the latest version was released were indeed differentiated. The M8 was for ICE and hybrid variants, with features suitable for family needs. The E9 was specifically for PHEV and had far more premium features,” said Iqbal in Beijing, China, on Friday (24/4/2026). However, in the latest development, GAC has simplified the model naming. This means that, in terms of the product, the E9 and M8 PHEV essentially refer to the same model, differing only in naming strategies in each market. Nevertheless, the M8 name cannot always be applied in all countries. Iqbal revealed that there are obstacles related to naming rights in some regions. “But in some countries like Thailand and others, the M8 naming has legal issues because another brand uses that name,” said Iqbal. Therefore, the use of the E9 name in Indonesia does not mean the model brought is different from the M8 in China, but rather an adjustment for legal aspects and market strategy. For information, the GAC E9 features plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology with a focus on comfort and luxury. The car is also designed to meet the needs of consumers who want a premium MPV with fuel efficiency and electric driving capabilities.
