GAC AION S Owners File Complaints Over Battery Issues
Jakarta (ANTARA) - Owners of GAC AION S vehicles in China have reported serious defects that could compromise driving safety, including swelling, leaks and ruptured battery cells resulting in a loss of power whilst the vehicle is in use.
CarnewsChina reported on Tuesday that the majority of complaints came from vehicles that had travelled between 150,000 and 300,000 kilometres.
According to data from the consumer complaint platforms 12365auto and Black Cat, a total of 182 complaints were recorded within just half a month.
Of the roughly 213,000 vehicles using the component in question, the reported defect rate has reached 4.7 per cent.
Growing public attention, including coverage by the Chinese state media outlet Xinhua, prompted GAC AION and CALB to issue apologies on 18 July 2026.
In addition, vehicle owners have been promised free inspections and battery replacements should any damage be found.
GAC AION has also stated it will provide subsidies to consumers whose vehicles require repairs lasting more than five days, whilst CALB is offering free inspection and maintenance services.
The suspected causes include a suboptimal electrolyte system design, inconsistent assembly precision, and what is considered inadequate battery lifespan testing.
As the GAC AION case is said to involve a larger number of vehicles, the cost of remediation is estimated to potentially exceed that figure.
