The Group of Seven (G7) summit, under the French presidency, concluded on Wednesday in Evian without the issuance of a final communiqué. This marks the second consecutive year that the group of seven Western powers has failed to adopt a final communiqué. Previously, the Canadian-led G7 summit in 2025 also experienced a similar failure. During the Evian summit, nine working documents addressing specific themes were published, covering various fields such as geopolitics, the global economy, and public health. The summit organisers had abandoned plans to issue a final communiqué from the preparatory stage, opting instead to publish thematic documents to avoid highlighting differences between the United States and its allies, Japan’s Kyodo News reported, citing diplomatic sources. For the host country, the Evian summit was ‘objectively successful’ because the seven countries reached consensus on the crisis in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, strategic minerals, macroeconomic rebalancing, and other issues, French President Emmanuel Macron said at a press conference following the summit. The French president said he was aware of differences between the US and its six allies, such as on climate change and the United Nations. However, he wanted to be ‘pragmatic’ and would therefore continue engagement with Washington so that the G7 does not turn into a ‘6+1’ format, Macron told the media. The G7 comprises the US, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, and Japan. France holds the rotating G7 presidency this year.
