Furor as Teenage Convoy Ignites Fireworks on Northern Ring Road
A video of teenagers conducting a vehicle convoy whilst setting off fireworks on the Northern Ring Road or Jalan Padjajaran went viral on social media. In the incident, two teenagers were apprehended by residents and handed over to police.
The incident went viral after a video of a group of teenagers passing through the fast lane of the Northern Ring Road whilst igniting fireworks circulated widely on social media. One upload came from the Instagram account @merapi_uncover.
In the uploaded video, the vehicle convoy can be seen igniting fireworks directed upwards and towards the right and left sides of the road, creating sparks in the middle of the fairly congested traffic. In another post’s video, the fireworks reportedly struck a passing resident.
Regarding the incident, Mlati Police Chief Kompol Edi Mulyono confirmed that the incident occurred on Monday (9 March) evening on Jalan Padjajaran, Sinduadi, Mlati, Sleman. Two students involved in the convoy were successfully apprehended by residents.
“Mlati Police Station is taking follow-up action regarding the convoy action of a group of student teenagers on Jl Padjajaran on Monday evening who were caught by local residents, with the police securing 2 students who were involved in the convoy,” said Kompol Edi in a written statement received by detikJogja on Tuesday (10 March 2026).
The two secured students, with initials M (17) and F (17), are both residents of Sleman Regency. From the examination results, both admitted they had previously attended a breaking-of-fast gathering in the Kaliurang Road Km 16 area.
“They admitted they previously held a breaking-of-fast event; on returning from that activity, the convoy performed a convoy display by igniting fireworks,” he said.
Edi explained that when passing through the Northern Ring Road, the convoy used the fast lane. Meanwhile, fireworks were ignited and directed upwards as well as to the right or left side of the road it was travelling on. The fireworks then struck a resident who was passing through.
“The fireworks struck a resident with initials SMAP (25) who was passing through the location,” he explained.
The victim, together with her husband, then pursued the convoy with assistance from nearby residents. Two students were eventually apprehended in front of a pharmacy in the Monjali area.
“The victim with her husband spontaneously pursued with help from local residents and successfully apprehended the 2 students in front of the next pharmacy and then brought by officers to Mlati Police Station,” he said.
In this incident, the victim did not suffer injuries from the fireworks directed by the convoy. However, the victim was startled and shocked.
“The victim did not file a report but requested to be coached by Mlati Police Station,” he said.
In addition to the two apprehended teenagers, officers also conducted a search operation on the student convoy. Subsequently, the friends of the suspected perpetrators as well as their parents will be called for further coaching.
“We conduct profiling of the convoy and call the parents for further coaching,” he concluded.
