Furniture Shopping Trends Shift, Consumers Prioritise Durability and Comfort
Consumer behaviour in selecting furniture is undergoing a shift. While price was previously the primary consideration, an increasing number of people are now prioritising material quality, product durability, and ergonomic comfort as deciding factors before making a purchase.
This change in trend is prompting furniture industry players to introduce products that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also capable of providing long-term utility for consumers. Public awareness regarding product quality is deemed to be rising alongside the increased access to information via various digital platforms.
Key aspects currently attracting consumer attention include frame materials, the quality of foam or padding, types of upholstery, and the precision of construction and finishing. For instance, furniture with solid wood frames is generally regarded as having better durability compared to particle-based materials.
Marco Halim, Co-Founder of Xionco, stated that consumers today increasingly understand the importance of material quality in determining the lifespan of a piece of furniture. “In the past, people believed that cheap, high-quality, and good-looking could not coexist. We are proving the opposite,” Marco said in a written statement on Monday (2/25/2026).
According to him, the price of furniture should reflect the actual quality received by the consumer. Consequently, companies are striving to present products that maintain a balance between quality, aesthetics, and affordability.
This rising consumer awareness is also driving manufacturers to maintain consistent quality, from the production process to after-sales service. In addition to product quality, delivery speed and customer service are also factors influencing purchasing decisions.
Jansen Halim, Co-Founder of Xionco, noted that customer trust is built through a user experience that meets expectations. “We do not want to merely sell furniture. We want to ensure that every product that reaches the consumer truly provides more value than what they have paid,” said Jansen.
He added that the increased consumer focus on quality presents an opportunity for the domestic furniture industry to demonstrate its competitiveness. The trust shown by several international companies operating in Indonesia towards local products indicates that national furniture quality is capable of competing in an increasingly competitive market.
“We do not feel the need to compare ourselves with foreign brands. Our focus is to continuously improve product standards and ensure consumers receive the best from within the country,” Jansen remarked.
Industry players believe that this quality-oriented shopping trend has the potential to drive an increase in national furniture product standards. Moving forward, durability, comfort, and material quality are expected to become more decisive factors in consumer choices than price alone.
