Furious Trump Calls Spain a Loser, Britain Very Disappointing

President of the United States Donald Trump has criticised two US allies, Spain and the United Kingdom. He called Spain a ‘loser’ and said Prime Minister Keir Starmer should back the American campaign against Iran ‘without question’. ‘We have many winners, but Spain is a loser, and the UK is very disappointing,’ Trump said, reported by the New York Post on Friday (6 March 2026). Trump also said Spain is ‘very hostile’ to NATO. ‘They do not pay their dues – they are the only ones choosing to oppose paying 5%, and they are very hostile to everyone,’ he said, referring to the alliance’s pledge to contribute 5% of GDP from each country to defence. Asked about Telegraph reports that he also called Starmer a ‘loser’ in private conversations, Trump replied bluntly. Speaking at a White House press conference, Trump said Starmer ‘is not Winston Churchill’ and accused him of undermining international relations. ‘Well, he’s not Winston Churchill, let me say,’ Trump told the New York Post. According to the reports, Trump was frustrated with Starmer for not allowing the US to use British military bases in its bombardment campaign against Iran. Previously, Starmer on Thursday (5 March) defended the decision not to join the US-Israel attack on Iran, saying the best solution to the problem was ‘a negotiated settlement with Iran, in which they stop their nuclear ambitions.’ ‘That is very disappointing - his performance, in relation to our large-scale attack on a hostile country,’ Trump said. Trump said he had recently spoken with Starmer, without giving further details. ‘I am very surprised by Keir. Very disappointed,’ he exclaimed. ‘I agree with him,’ Trump said. ‘But he, sometimes, does not do what he should do,’ he concluded.
