Amien Rais' political moves get more amusing by the day. It seems that every issue has been politicized by him. Also, Amien Rais, who is Speaker of the People's Consultative Assembly, is concerned about the detention of central bank Governor Sjahril Sabirin by the Attorney General's Office for his alleged involvement in the Bank Bali scandal.

Earlier this week, Amien Rais stated that he wished to see Attorney General Marzuki Darusman in connection with the BI governor's case. He hinted there was something mysterious behind Sjahril Sabirin's detention. Amien Rais had met with Sjahril in his detention room, so he wanted to get accurate information about the reasons behind the detention. My question is whether such actions are proper for the Assembly Speaker.

However, Amien emphasized that he by no means wanted to interfere with the attorney general's authority. That is really funny, because such a wish is not held only by Amien Rais. Bus drivers, farmers and everybody else obviously has the same feeling. But these people do not want to get a special explanation from the attorney general. So Amien Rais (confessing to be a commoner) must have a special motive for moving in that direction.

Certainly no other ordinary commoners can freely do things as Amien Rais has done. Political observers have been watching Amien Rais engage in a political race against President Abdurrahman Wahid. It is no secret anymore that before his detention, Sjahril Sabirin had been on bad terms with President Abdurrahman Wahid. Perhaps Amien Rais is playing the political card that states "the enemy of my opponent is my friend".
