Tehran (ANTARA) - The funeral of the late Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and his family members will be held in early July, according to an announcement by the funeral committee on Saturday (13/6).

In the announcement by the Committee for the “Commemoration of the Bloody Ascension of the Martyred Militant Imam”, the final public tribute ceremony will be held on 4–5 July at the Grand Imam Khomeini Mosque in Tehran. The date corresponds to 13-14 Tir on the Persian calendar or 19 and 20 Muharram on the Hijri calendar.

The funeral procession is scheduled to take place in Tehran on 6 July, followed by a second procession in the holy city of Qom on 7 July, the committee said. The final series of funeral ceremonies will take place on 9 July in the holy city of Mashhad, coinciding with the eve of the commemoration of the death of Imam Sajjad (AS), also known as Zayn al-Abidin, the fourth imam in the Shia tradition and great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The deceased leader will be buried in the holy shrine complex of Imam Reza (AS), the eighth imam in the Shia tradition, located in Mashhad.

The funeral committee invited all Iranian citizens, freedom-loving people of the world, followers of Islamic teachings, and all interested parties to attend the series of ceremonies. The committee also expressed appreciation to government institutions, civil society organisations, and various other institutions for their assistance. However, the committee stressed that the primary role in organising the event remains in the hands of the people who continue to mourn and participate in the series of activities.

While praying that the event will be a magnificent and special occasion, the committee stated that further details will be announced later. According to local reports, Ayatollah Khamenei and several of his family members were killed in an attack described as a United States-Israel terrorist attack targeting his residence in Tehran on 28 February, the first day of the joint US-Israeli aggression against Iran.
