Funds sought to protect Straits
SINGAPORE (DPA): Singapore wants countries using the Straits of Singapore and Malacca to contribute financially and play an active role in protecting both waterways, Communications Minister Mah Bow Tan said.
Mah's were being discussed by 180 participants at the first international conference on the Straits of Malacca and Singapore.
"So far only Japan has provided funds to help fight pollution in the straits, with Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore shouldering the main financial burden," Mah said.
He emphasized that the smooth flow of goods in the straits had benefited not only countries in the region but also Europe, the United States and Japan.
