Fund raising campaign

BANDUNG: West Java Governor R. Nuriana appealed to all regents and mayors in the province to step up their campaigns to raise funds to help the government in its fight against poverty.

Under the fund raising program, known as Rereongan Sarupi, launched three months ago, everyone in the province is expected to chip in Rp 100 a month to the campaign, which is being administered by the regents and mayors.

By the third month, the campaign had already collected Rp 2.37 billion ($1 million). Some of the money has been distributed to poor villages, Nuriana told regents and mayors gathering at the Provincial Legislative Council Building.

The money has largely been spent on health care and education for the poor. The remaining Rp 966 million has been deposited in various banks.

Bogor tops the list of 25 regencies and mayoralties in terms of funds collected, with Rp 523 million. Sukabumi came in last with Rp 11 million. (emb)
