Jakarta, Kompas.com — Through a letter, Indonesia’s fifth President Megawati Soekarnoputri has extended congratulations on the appointment of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new Supreme Leader.

The PDI-Perjuangan party, led by Megawati, claims the letter was appreciated by Iran. According to PDI-P Secretary General Hasto Kristiyanto, Megawati was the first to extend greetings to Iran following the death of Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a strike by a coalition of the United States and Israel.

“Ambassador Mohammad Boroujerdi noted that Mrs Megawati was always first and exemplifies a leader who not only loves peace, but also champions humanitarian values and justice in global relations,” said Hasto in a statement on Monday (16 March 2026).

He mentioned that when Megawati received Boroujerdi a few days prior, the ambassador expressed joy that Iran now had a leader again.

“This is the second letter, and I felt glad that Iran now has a leader again,” said Megawati, as conveyed by Hasto.

The letter is dated Jakarta, 9 March 2026, addressed to His Excellency Ayatollah Sayyid Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, regarding congratulatory remarks.
