An alleged harassment case has occurred at SMAN 1 Sentolo, Kulon Progo. The incident began when a female student requested assistance from the perpetrator, a security guard, to retrieve a forgotten item.

According to a written statement from the Yogyakarta Provincial Government (jogjaprov.go.id), the victim reported the incident to the school’s guidance and counselling (BK) teacher on 31 July 2026. In the report, it was stated that the security guard attempted to embrace the victim, but she immediately avoided him.

“The case began on 31 July 2026, when a female student reported to the BK teacher that she was embraced on the shoulder by a security guard. The incident occurred around 4:00 PM WIB while the guard was escorting the student to her classroom to retrieve a forgotten item. In the school report, the student is noted to have immediately avoided the action,” the statement read.

Meanwhile, the Vice Principal for Student Affairs, Johan Wahyudi, told local media that CCTV footage was reviewed after the report was received, confirming the incident.

“There was indeed an attempt to embrace her; she avoided it and then ran away while on a video call with a friend, presumably to ensure it would not happen again,” Johan said on Thursday (18/09/2026).

Between 3–13 August 2026, the school coordinated with the security service provider. According to Disdikpora DIY, the security guard has apologised and received sanctions.

Johan explained that the school requested the guard be immediately transferred and replaced. However, he also expressed a desire not to have the guard dismissed out of sympathy for his livelihood.

“The main goal was to have him rotated so the students do not feel uncomfortable. We went there with the video evidence,” he said.

“We said, ‘Your subordinate is caught on video attempting to embrace her, but she avoided it. Please rotate him. Do not fire him, as it would affect his livelihood; just move him.’”

After being summoned by the service provider, the security guard reportedly admitted to the actions captured on CCTV.

“The security guard was invited to write a written agreement. He was issued a third warning (SP3). If he repeats the offence, he will be dismissed,” Johan added.

On 14 September 2026, the case resurfaced after a student posted a flyer on social media questioning the handling of the incident. This post triggered a clarification video from another student.

“Ultimately, because the students and seniors felt the matter had not been resolved, they created a flyer claiming the harassment was not being addressed and was being hidden,” Johan explained.

Johan argued that the claim that the case was being ignored or concealed was inaccurate, as the school maintains that action has been taken.

“The implication that it was not being addressed or was being hidden is incorrect because it has been resolved. It may simply be that they are unsatisfied with the outcome,” he said.

On 17 September 2026, a group of students from SMAN 1 Sentolo gathered at the school’s guidance and counselling room. This was also related to the handling of the harassment case.

“The students spontaneously asked, ‘Who said it wasn’t resolved? It’s being ignored, and the guard is still visible.’ I then explained the timeline of the process and that the matter had been addressed,” said Johan.

Johan Wahyudi emphasised that the harassment case has been handled, but noted that the issue resurfaced alongside grievances regarding school start times.

“The root cause was a school policy that students disliked, namely starting at 06:50 AM. The school expects students to be in their classrooms by 07:00 AM, accounting for the 10-minute walk from the parking area,” Johan revealed.

“This issue was used as a pretext. They said, ‘We do not agree with the 06:50 AM start time, and even this harassment case hasn’t been handled.’ The harassment issue was essentially ‘piggybacking’ on the policy protest. However, the protest itself is what went viral.

On 18 September 2026, Disdikpora DIY intervened to handle both the harassment case and allegations of student intimidation at SMAN 1 Sentolo. The Head of Disdikpora DIY, Raden Suci Rohmadi, stated that they will verify whether the security guard is no longer stationed at the school as of today.

“The individual has been sanctioned by the vendor. We will follow up to ensure whether he has indeed been removed or otherwise,” Suci stated on Thursday (17/09/2026).

Regarding the alleged intimidation of the student who posted the clarification video, Disdikpora DIY plans to summon the school officials.

“I am still investigating whether there was any intimidation against the student who made the video go viral. I will summon the Principal along with the Head of the Kulon Progo Education Office to provide testimony. Although there was no mention of intimidation in the initial report,” Suci asserted.
