The Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) has revealed the initial chronology of the suspected train accident at Bekasi Timur Station in West Java, which began when a commuter electric train (KRL) on the Bekasi–Cikarang route collided with a vehicle at the JPL 85 level crossing, triggering the incident.

“Based on the initial chronology, the accident incident began when the KRL train on the Bekasi–Cikarang route collided with a vehicle at the JPL 85 level crossing,” said Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi in a statement in Jakarta on Tuesday.

As a result of the incident, the KRL train had to be evacuated and designated as an Extraordinary Journey (PLB) with code 5181 because it stopped and operated outside the regular schedule.

Consequently, personnel halted another KRL train with code PLB 5568 heading to Cikarang at the platform of Bekasi Timur Station.

However, the KA Argo Bromo Anggrek (KA 4) on the Jakarta–Surabaya route did not manage to stop fully, leading to an incident with the stationary KA PLB 5568.

The Ministry of Transportation continues to coordinate intensively with all relevant parties to ensure the evacuation process runs optimally.

Victim evacuation is being carried out in stages, measured, and with full caution to minimise additional risks, considering the condition of the train and the safety of personnel and victims.

“These efforts are supported by establishing an Emergency Response Post at Bekasi Timur Station as well as intensive medical handling at health facilities,” he said.

The Ministry of Transportation also fully supports the investigation process conducted by the National Committee for Transportation Safety (KNKT) to uncover the exact causes of the accident objectively and comprehensively.

The Minister emphasised that his side is providing space and awaiting the KNKT to conduct an independent investigation so that the results can serve as a basis for comprehensive future evaluations.

Dudy also requested prayers from the public so that the evacuation process can proceed quickly, safely, and prioritise safety, as well as rescue the victims still inside the train.

“We are also giving the KNKT the opportunity to conduct an objective investigation,” said Dudy.

The government ensures that all victims receive the best handling and rights in accordance with applicable provisions, while reaffirming its commitment to continuously strengthening the national transportation safety system.
