Fuel train derails, delay ensues

INDONESIA: A train carrying fuel derailed in the Central Java regency of Tegal, some 200 meters east of Tegal station, on Saturday afternoon, as thousands of holiday travelers returned to Jakarta.

The accident occurred only a day after the Gaya Baru train was also derailed on the same track in Cirebon regency in West Java, causing a six-hour delay for a number of other train services.

The derailment in Tegal began at 6 p.m when the train was running west from Maos train station in Cilacap regency, Central Java.

Shortly before the train was about to arrive at Tegal train station, two of 13 cars were derailed. Each car was carrying 38,000 liters of diesel oil. No fatalities were reported in the incident.

As of 9 p.m on Saturday, the train schedule had not returned to normal and employees of PT Kereta Api Indonesia, the sole train operator in the country, were still trying to solve the problem. -- JP
