Fuel Prices Rise, Airfares Increase: Will Bus Tickets Follow Suit?
The escalation of conflict in the Middle East is impacting the availability of petroleum fuel (BBM) worldwide, including in Indonesia. This situation has led the Indonesian government to decide on adjusting the prices of non-subsidised petroleum fuel starting Saturday (18/4/2026). The rise in fuel prices is also affecting the transportation industry, including aviation. In particular in Indonesia, airlines such as Garuda Indonesia, Citilink, and TransNusa are planning to increase airfare prices. A similar statement was made by the President Director of PT Citilink Indonesia, Darsito Hendroseputro. “Citilink will make a measured adjustment to ticket prices, considering various aspects, including the company’s operational sustainability, public purchasing power, and regulatory provisions,” said Darsito. “The possible average increase (not all routes are the same) ranges from 10-14 percent,” said TransNusa President Director Bayu Sutanto when contacted by Kompas.com on Tuesday (7/4/2026). As reported by Kompas.com (8/4/2026), Bayu explained that this airfare increase complies with Ministerial Decree (KM) Number 83 of 2026, regarding the adjustment of additional fuel costs (fuel surcharge) by 38 percent for jet and non-jet aircraft, effective from 6 April 2026. If the fuel price increase is causing airfares to rise, then what about bus ticket prices—will bus tickets also increase? “For now, since BBM has not yet risen, there is no increase in Sumber Alam bus ticket prices,” said Anthony to Kompas.com via WhatsApp message on Monday (20/4/2026). Separately, DAMRI Head of Corporate Communication P Septian Adri S. stated that DAMRI is currently evaluating and calculating the impact of the current situation on service tariffs.
