Fuel Prices Adjusted, Eddy Soeparno Reminds That Subsidies Must Be Targeted Correctly
Deputy Chairman of the MPR RI from the National Mandate Party (PAN) faction, Eddy Soeparno, assesses that the policy of adjusting the prices of non-subsidised fuels demonstrates the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable segments of society.
Eddy stated that the policy is a response to geopolitical tensions impacting global energy price fluctuations and pressure on the rupiah exchange rate.
“The absence of increases in subsidised fuels and 3kg LPG serves as an important signal that the purchasing power of the lower-income population is being maintained. This policy reflects the state’s efforts to balance the need to maintain fiscal health with social responsibility towards the people, especially amid economic conditions that have not fully recovered,” said Eddy in his statement on Monday (20/4/2026).
This was conveyed by Eddy during a series of events in the Nusantara Capital (IKN) with MPR RI Chairman Ahmad Muzani and other MPR leaders.
Eddy emphasised that the adjustment of non-subsidised fuel prices must be accompanied by supervision to ensure that energy subsidies are truly received by those who are entitled. According to him, the distribution mechanism for subsidised fuels and 3kg LPG needs to be implemented consistently in the field.
“The price adjustment in the non-subsidised segment must be balanced with efforts to ensure that fuel subsidies are targeted only at entitled groups. There must be consistent and firm mechanisms in the field to ensure that subsidised fuel and 3kg LPG are received only by those who are entitled,” Eddy continued.
Furthermore, Eddy urged the government to take strategic steps to strengthen national energy resilience. One of them is by significantly reducing dependence on imported energy sources.
“President Prabowo’s commitment to continuously increasing the share of renewable energy is an important step to strengthen national energy resilience. After all, with the still high dependence on fossil energy, especially that influenced by global markets, every oil price shock in the world will always have the potential to pressure our economy,” explained Eddy.
Eddy stated that the development of renewable energy such as solar, wind, and bioenergy based on domestic resources needs to be accelerated. According to him, this step is important to reduce dependence on imported energy and protect the economy from the impacts of global fluctuations.
In addition, Eddy views the acceleration of the energy transition as part of efforts to create a healthier and cleaner environment.
“Therefore, I am convinced and believe that the urgency of realising energy resilience is as important as efforts to realise national resilience. The energy transition is no longer a choice, but a necessity,” Eddy concluded.
