Fuel Becoming Scarcer, KAI's Locomotives and Gensets Switch to B40
PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) has revealed that all its locomotives and gensets are now using B40 biodiesel for operations.
KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that this represents the company’s commitment to implementing green energy amid the increasing scarcity of petroleum-based fuels (BBM). The company is also preparing to adopt B50 to support efficiency and the sustainability of national transportation.
“All locomotives and gensets operated by KAI are using renewable energy through B40 biodiesel fuel,” said Anne in her statement on Monday, 13 April 2026.
She explained that the use of B40 supports KAI’s backing of the strategic initiatives by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) to introduce renewable energy in the transportation sector. Through this renewable energy utilisation, rail operations produce lower emissions and strengthen their role as an environmentally friendly logistics and transportation solution.
As a user of green energy technology, KAI continues to be a reliable mobility partner for the public. “We understand that efficiency and affordable travel costs are very important to the public. Amid the increasingly limited BBM conditions, trains provide a solution for mobility that remains economical and reliable,” Anne remarked.
According to her, by using B40—a product of the Ministry of ESDM’s innovation—every customer automatically becomes part of the major transformation towards a sustainable and environmentally friendly national energy transition.
“KAI places great emphasis and is ready to support the next steps from the Ministry of ESDM, namely the development of B50,” said Anne.
The government’s strategy to expand the use of biofuel (BBN) is part of a broader plan towards national energy independence and achieving the net zero emissions (NZE) target by 2060.
KAI, added Anne, is very enthusiastic about the introduction of B50, which can later be applied to railways. Given that travel safety is the top priority, all locomotives and gensets that will use B50 will undergo a series of technical trials first before officially serving customers.
Furthermore, she stated that KAI fully supports the Ministry of ESDM’s plans for the transition to B50. The advancing use of renewable energy makes trains even more superior in preserving the environment, so we can pass on a healthier environment to future generations.
