From Wealth to Legacy: The Importance of Intergenerational Planning

Preparing an inheritance for the next generation requires more than just accumulating assets. Long-term financial planning is essential to ensure that built wealth can be managed, protected, and passed on in accordance with family objectives.

This issue has gained attention amidst the limited long-term financial planning prevalent among the Indonesian population. The Sun Life Financial Resilience Index 2/2026 notes that 48 per cent of Indonesians do not have a long-term financial plan or only plan for up to one year ahead. Conversely, individuals with long-term financial plans recorded a higher level of financial confidence at 86 per cent, compared to only 25 per cent for those without long-term plans.

These issues were discussed during the Wealth Practice session at the CIMB Niaga Wealth XPO 2026, themed “Legacy Beyond Wealth: Preparing Values, Protection, and Life Choices for the Next Generation”. The session, presented by Sun Life Indonesia alongside CIMB Niaga, encouraged clients to view legacy more broadly—not just as material wealth, but as family values, education, protection, and opportunities for the next generation.

During the session, Najwa Shihab shared her perspective on how parents prepare for their children’s future. According to her, an inheritance is not merely composed of assets, but also the values that serve as a foundation for children to determine their own lives. “We cannot choose life for our children. What we can do is equip them with values that act as a compass and a foundation, providing them with choices,” said Najwa.

Najwa added that part of preparing for a child’s future involves ensuring that what parents build today continues to provide them with a sense of security in the future.

A similar perspective was shared by Izzat Ibrahim Assegaf. From a child’s point of view, he sees legacy as being related not only to inheritance but also to values, security, and readiness for the future. “As a child, I see legacy not just about inheritance, but also values, security, and readiness to face the future. Financial protection, such as insurance, can be one way for a family to build that readiness,” said Izzat.

Noviady Wahyudi, Director of Consumer & Emerging Business Banking at CIMB Niaga, stated that client needs in wealth management are constantly evolving. Clients require strategies not only to build wealth but also to manage and protect it so it can be passed on to their families. “Therefore, legacy planning is a vital part of comprehensive long-term wealth planning and needs to be prepared from an early age,” said Noviady.

He noted that wealth planning must help families ensure that the assets and values built can provide long-term benefits. This aligns with CIMB Niaga’s goal to assist clients and the community in improving prosperity.

Beyond financial aspects, legal readiness is also a crucial component of inheritance planning. Rieke Caroline, S.H., M.Kn., a Notary Public and Founder of Kontrak Hukum, discussed several aspects families need to prepare, ranging from documents, inheritance, wills, and grants to the importance of open communication within the family.

Albertus Wiroyo, President Director of Sun Life Indonesia, stated that a meaningful legacy needs to be translated into more concrete and structured planning. Life protection is one option that can be considered in such planning. “A meaningful legacy is not just about wealth, but also the values, affection, and security that we wish to pass on to our families,” said Albertus.

During the session, Sun Life Indonesia and CIMB Niaga also introduced the X-Tra Proteksi Waris USD as an option for legacy planning. This traditional US dollar-denominated life insurance product offers protection until the insured reaches 100 years of age, with Prime, Signature, and Excellence plan options.
