From Waste to Compost: Jakarta Primary School Pupils Learn Waste Management
Pupils at SDN Joglo 05 in Jakarta took part in a waste management education session on Wednesday (12/8/2026), learning to sort waste at source and process organic material into compost. The activity was designed to support the Jakarta provincial government’s efforts to reduce the volume of waste sent to Bantargebang landfill. Teachers guided the pupils through practical exercises in handling organic waste within the school grounds, helping them understand that food scraps and other organic matter need not always end up as rubbish but can be repurposed. Pupils also queued to weigh plastic waste as part of the session. The school hopes that habits of sorting and processing waste will grow at school and be carried into homes and surrounding neighbourhoods.
