From Today, the Government Begins a Staged Evacuation of Indonesian Citizens in Iran
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) has begun a staged evacuation of Indonesian citizens (WNI) in Iran on Friday, 6 April 2026. The evacuation follows the conflict between Iran and Israel and the United States (US) which has led to heightened tensions in the Middle East. ‘Regarding the plan to evacuate Indonesian citizens in Iran, we are monitoring the developments in Iran and its security, and the evacuation of Indonesian citizens in Iran will commence gradually today,’ said Acting Director for Protection of Indonesian Citizens at Kemlu, Heni Hamidah, at a press conference at Kemlu, on Friday, 6 March 2026. However, subsequent evacuation routes will still be adjusted to real conditions on the ground and determined by the Indonesian representatives at the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran and the Indonesian Embassy in Baku, Azerbaijan. He stated that the Indonesian Embassy in Tehran will continue to communicate and reach out to Indonesian citizens who are still in Tehran, whether residing or currently in Iran. The Embassy will remain operational to provide assistance and meet the needs of Indonesian citizens still in the country. ‘But the public should also understand that there are on-the-ground factors that still require substantial adjustment given the highly dynamic situation on the ground,’ he said. Therefore, the public is urged to continue monitoring official information updates from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and to give space to all teams involved to carry out their duties, including the Tehran Embassy as the frontline in this evacuation process.
