From the Strait of Hormuz to the Taiwan Issue: What Agreements Were Reached Between Trump and Xi Jinping?
US President Donald Trump has concluded his latest round of talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, bringing an end to his state visit to Beijing.
Trump described the meeting as “very successful, recognised by the world, and unforgettable”.
Xi called it a “historic and significant milestone”, according to Chinese state media.
Trade, oil, Iran, and Taiwan were among the topics discussed during the two-day meeting.
Earlier, in an interview with Fox News, Trump said Xi had committed to curbing the shipment of military equipment to Iran.
The US president also said China wanted the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened and that Beijing had agreed to buy oil from the US.
While Trump detailed much of what the US had gained from China, he declined to elaborate on what China wanted in return, the BBC’s reporter in Beijing reports.

What did Trump and Xi say in the joint press conference?
President Xi Jinping invited President Donald Trump to tour Zhongnanhai, the heavily guarded complex where China’s top leaders live and work.
This was the main event on the last day of Trump’s visit to Beijing, before he was scheduled to return to the White House.
In a joint press conference after the tour, Trump said that he and Xi had discussed trade, Iran, and “many other things”.
Regarding Iran, Trump said “we don’t want them to have nuclear weapons” and stressed that “we want the Strait of Hormuz to remain open”.
Meanwhile, Xi said that the two sides had reached a “new bilateral relationship”, and promised to send Trump some rose seeds from China that they admired during their walk in Zhongnanhai.
A few hours before the tour, Fox News aired an interview with Trump, in which he said Xi had promised not to supply military equipment to Iran.
“But at the same time, he said they buy a lot of oil from there and want to continue to do so,” Trump said.
In the interview, Trump also said that China had agreed to buy oil from the US and 200 Boeing planes.
Trump said that trade talks were going “better than ever”.
He then added that the business leaders he brought to Beijing were there to “make deals” and “bring jobs back”.
What did Trump and Xi say yesterday?
The day before, Donald Trump and Xi Jinping discussed ways to enhance economic cooperation between the United States and China in a meeting on Thursday (14/05), according to a summary released by the White House.
The economic cooperation discussed by the two leaders included expanding access for US companies to the Chinese market and Chinese investment in US industries.
Leaders from some of the largest US companies also attended part of the meeting.
Trump and Xi also discussed the importance of stopping the flow of fentanyl precursors to the US.
According to the White House statement, the two countries also agreed that Iran should not have nuclear weapons.
The US statement also said that both sides agreed that the Strait of Hormuz “must remain open to support the smooth flow of energy”.
During the talks, President Xi “expressed interest” in buying more US oil to reduce China’s dependence on the Strait of Hormuz, the White House statement said.
Xi warns of potential ‘conflict’ with US over Taiwan
Shortly after the talks began, Chinese state media released a statement by President Xi Jinping warning of potential “conflict” with the US over Taiwan. President Trump did not answer questions from reporters about whether the Taiwan issue was also discussed.
Trump described the outcome of his talks with President Xi Jinping as “very good”, after a nearly two-hour meeting between the two leaders in Beijing, China, on Thursday (14/5).
However, he did not say whether the Taiwan issue was also discussed.
The self-governing island, which is claimed by Beijing, is one of the main sources of tension, along with trade tariffs, technology competition, and the Iran issue.

However, Beijing also gave Trump a grand welcome: a salute, a welcome by children, and a visit to the 15th-century Temple of Heaven.
The grand welcome given to Trump by China is not just a formality, but has important meaning, writes the BBC’s correspondent in China.
Trump was also accompanied by a number of top technology company executives in Beijing, including Jensen Huang from Nvidia.
