From Sukarno to Prabowo: The Tradition of Indonesian Presidents' Eid Celebrations Evolves

President Prabowo Subianto performed Eid al-Fitr prayers at Masjid Darussalam in Aceh Tamiang, Aceh, today, Saturday (21/3/2026), before continuing with halal bihalal activities with the local community. Previously, only President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) had ever celebrated Eid al-Fitr in Aceh. For decades, Indonesian presidents more frequently celebrated Eid al-Fitr in Jakarta, including performing Eid prayers at Masjid Istiqlal. That tradition changed in the Jokowi era, as he became the first Indonesian president to introduce the custom of celebrating Eid outside Jakarta, even in various remote parts of the country.
