Efforts by the mining industry to mitigate environmental impacts are increasingly in the spotlight, and PT Amman Mineral Nusa Tenggara (Amman) has demonstrated a different approach by surpassing government standards to achieve the Green PROPER rating for 2026. This award from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) is granted not merely for compliance, but because Amman is assessed as implementing practices beyond compliance in environmental management and community empowerment. The recognition was confirmed at the PROPER Environmental Awards ceremony on 7 April 2026 in Jakarta, which serves as a benchmark for company environmental performance in Indonesia. Minister of Environment and Forestry/Head of the Environmental Control Agency Hanif Faisol Nurofiq emphasised that the award is expected to encourage industry to continuously improve sustainability standards. “This achievement is hoped not only to be an award, but also a momentum to further enhance the quality of sustainable environmental compliance. It is important to remember that the PROPER instrument is not just a technical assessment, but a form of trust and national sovereignty that we must safeguard together to drive greener and more responsible industrial performance,” said Hanif in his statement on Friday (10/4/2026). This step is reinforced by the construction of a 450 megawatt Gas and Steam Power Plant (PLTGU), used as part of the energy transition to reduce emissions compared to coal-based plants. On the other hand, innovation is also carried out in the production process, one of which is through replacing the SAG Mill liner to lower energy intensity in ore processing. Not only that, waste management is also a focus. Cardboard waste, which was previously sent to third parties, is now utilised as organic mulch for reclamation. This innovation is considered more economical while supporting the reduce, reuse, recycle (3R) principles. Amman Vice President of Corporate Communications Kartika Octaviana said that this achievement reflects the company’s consistency in implementing sustainable practices. “Achieving Green PROPER is a manifestation of Amman’s integrity in applying responsible and sustainable operational practices. We believe that sustainability is a strategic long-term investment. Therefore, our commitment does not stop at meeting compliance, but continues to drive innovation to create measurable positive impacts for the environment and communities in our operational areas,” added Kartika. The programmes implemented include building artificial coral reefs, turtle conservation, and monitoring marine biodiversity. In addition, the community is involved in developing sustainable tourism. On land, economic empowerment is also a focus. In Sekongkang District, West Sumbawa Regency, more than 125 families are involved in processing organic waste into valuable products. Up to 2025, tens of thousands of kilograms of waste have been successfully managed, which not only creates economic value but also encourages changes in community behaviour in preserving the environment. Another programme in the form of community-based nurseries also shows resident involvement in providing seedlings for reclamation, while opening new sources of livelihood. With these various initiatives, Amman affirms its position as an industry player that not only pursues production, but also strives to maintain a balance between business activities, the environment, and community welfare.
