The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) conducted a sting operation in Pemalang Regency on Tuesday (28 July), arresting Regent Anom Widiyantoro.

Anom became the twelfth regional head to be netted in a KPK sting operation this year.

“It is correct, there has been an arrest of the Pemalang regent,” said KPK Deputy Chairman Fitroh Rohcahyanto when confirmed by CNNIndonesia.com via written message on Wednesday (29 July).

Fitroh declined to reveal the case that ensnared the regent, leading to his arrest in the sting operation. He was also unable to detail how many people were arrested besides the Pemalang Regent.

“For further details, please ask the spokesperson,” he said.

Anom, who ran alongside deputy Nurkholes, began his term as regional head on 20 February 2025 after being inaugurated by President Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace.

The Anom-Nurkholes ticket was backed by a coalition of Golkar, Perindo, PSI, Gelora, and the Labour Party.

Anom grew up in West Java, completing his primary and secondary education in Cimahi and Bandung.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in Financial Management from Diponegoro University in Semarang (1996) and a master’s degree in Economics and Business from Padjadjaran University in Bandung (2005).

Born on 20 March 1970, Anom has extensive experience in the corporate world, particularly within state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

According to the official website of the Pemalang Regency Government, Anom served as expert staff, internal auditor, section head, finance and personnel manager, finance and operations manager for the overseas department, and general manager of PT WIKA from 1996 to 2021.

From 2021 to 2024, Anom served as Director of Finance, Human Capital, and Risk Management at PT Hotel Indonesia Property (PT HIPA).

According to the State Officials’ Wealth Report (LHKPN) submitted to the KPK, Anom recorded assets totalling Rp21.3 billion.

The KPK has been actively pursuing regional heads suspected of corruption through sting operations.

So far this year, prior to Anom’s arrest, at least eleven regional heads had been detained in the anti-graft agency’s covert operations.

The corruption methods employed by these regional heads have varied, ranging from bribery and extortion to the acceptance of gratuities.

Regional heads prosecuted by the KPK include Madiun Mayor Maidi; Pati Regent Sudewo; Pekalongan Regent Fadia Arafiq; Rejang Lebong Regent in Bengkulu Province, Muhammad Fikri Thobari; Cilacap Regent Syamsul Auliya Rachman; and Tulungagung Regent Gatut Sunu Wibowo.

They also include Muara Enim Regent in South Sumatra, Edison; Kuantan Singingi Regent in Riau Province, Suhardiman Amby; Langkat Regent Syah Afandin; Sukoharjo Regent Etik Suryani; and West Lombok Regent Lalu Ahmad Zaini.
