From Monas to NTT: Jakarta residents mark Independence Day by strengthening solidarity
The commemoration of the 81st Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Indonesia at the National Monument (Monas) area, Central Jakarta, on Sunday (16/8), was not only a moment for the public to enjoy the festivities in preparation for the people’s party, but also fostered concern for the residents of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), who were affected by an earthquake.
The earthquake disaster that struck Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), served as a reminder that the spirit of Indonesian unity is tested not only when celebrating independence, but also when the nation faces disasters.
Kusnadi (48), a resident of Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, who came to Monas to observe preparations for the 81st Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, said that all Indonesian citizens have a moral responsibility to pray for and provide support to the people of NTT who are facing hardship.
According to him, distance is not a barrier to showing brotherhood as fellow citizens.
“As citizens, even though we are in Jakarta, our hope is that they are always given strength and that government assistance arrives as soon as possible,” said Kusnadi in the Monas area on Sunday.
He also expressed hope that the victims would be granted fortitude in facing the disaster and that the disaster response process would proceed quickly so that affected communities could recover promptly.
For Kusnadi, disasters are part of life that can befall anyone. Therefore, he urged all members of society to continue cultivating empathy and mutual support.
“May they always be given strength by God Almighty and may we always pray. After all, in this world we cannot escape from any disaster. Stay spirited and keep striving for the independence we are celebrating, especially tomorrow here in Jakarta,” said Kusnadi.
“In previous years, I came here and the event was lively. Many aircraft flew overhead, and there were also many parades,” Kusnadi revealed.
Nevertheless, according to him, the festivities of the celebration would feel more meaningful if the sense of brotherhood among all Indonesian people grew ever closer.
Entering the 81st year of independence, Kusnadi expressed hope that the aspirations of the nation’s founders to realise public welfare would draw closer to reality.
“In my view, for this 81st year of independence in Indonesia, the hope is that the Indonesian people will be more prosperous, just and affluent,” said Kusnadi.
