From Minibus Driver to Civil Servant: UNM Graduate Proves Dreams Can Come True

Success is not always born from an easy life. Maksin Sinaga, a graduate of the Information Systems programme at Universitas Nusa Mandiri (UNM), has proven that limitations can be overcome to achieve a prestigious career. From working various odd jobs, including as a public minibus driver and a janitor, he is now entrusted with the role of First Functional Officer at the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency (ATR/BPN) in Jakarta. His journey demonstrates that education, hard work, and integrity can pave the way to a better future. Born in Tarutung, North Sumatra, Maksin faced severe economic hardship, losing both parents at a young age. Despite this, he maintained a keen interest in technology. To fund his dream of higher education, he took on multiple jobs before moving to Jakarta, where he worked as a janitor at a church while assisting with administrative tasks. His decision to study Information Systems at UNM marked a turning point. During his studies, he deepened his technical competencies and built a strong work ethic. Even the death of his mother during his studies did not deter him; instead, it strengthened his resolve to succeed in her honour. After graduating, Maksin began his career in IT support before successfully passing the selection to become a civil servant at the Ministry of ATR/BPN in 2019. In his current role, he contributes to professional, transparent, and accountable procurement service governance. He has also been instrumental in identifying and resolving technical issues in service computer systems. Maksin credits his education at UNM for providing a crucial foundation, equipping him not only with technical skills but also with analytical thinking, communication, and collaboration abilities. He advises young people to never give up on their circumstances, stating that hardship should be a stepping stone, not a final destination. His story serves as a powerful example that with the right education, strong character, and a willingness to grow, anyone can create meaningful change for themselves, their community, and the nation.
