The richness of Peranakan Chinese culinary heritage has found a new home in the Glodok area of Jakarta. Rumah Kue Peranakan Tuan Wen 1980 has officially launched in Petak Enam, offering a variety of traditional cakes packaged with a modern touch without abandoning the authentic flavours of ancestral heritage.

Andrye Setiawan, the owner of Rumah Kue Peranakan Tuan Wen 1980, stated that the shop’s presence stems from his childhood memories of being familiar with various traditional Peranakan Chinese cakes. He wishes to revive those memories so they can continue to be enjoyed by people across generations. “This began with my memories of frequently enjoying traditional Chinese Peranakan cakes. I want to bring those memories back to life in Indonesia. We want to present Chinese Peranakan cakes with a more modern concept while still maintaining their original taste,” said Andrye during the grand opening in Jakarta on Saturday (1/8/2026).

According to him, Rumah Kue Peranakan Tuan Wen 1980 serves as one of the pioneers of modern-concept Peranakan Chinese bakeries in Jakarta. A wide range of options is available, ranging from mooncakes available year-round, cheese-filled piak, halal chicken char siu, chicken lemper, to various other traditional cakes, with affordable prices ranging from Rp9,000 to Rp18,000.

“We want the public to not have to wait for specific celebrations to enjoy mooncakes. All products can be enjoyed anytime, with flavour choices that we have adjusted to the Indonesian palate,” he said.

Andrye explained that the choice of the Glodok Petak Enam area was not without reason. This Chinatown area is considered to have strong historical value as a centre for Chinese Peranakan culture and as a culinary tourism destination frequently visited by both domestic and international tourists. “Our concept is very suitable for Chinatown. In addition to the local community, this area has now become a culinary tourism destination, attracting many tourists,” he added.

All recipes served are the result of research conducted by his team in several countries, such as Malaysia and Singapore, to study the authentic flavours of Chinese Peranakan cakes before adjusting them to Indonesian tastes. The production process is carried out independently in their own kitchen to maintain quality and consistency of flavour.

He added that public enthusiasm since the shop’s opening has been quite high. Supported by opening promotions, the concept of highlighting Chinese Peranakan culinary heritage serves as a particular attraction for visitors. Looking ahead, Andrye stated that he has no plans to open branches in other locations yet. The primary focus at this time is to strengthen the identity of Rumah Kue Peranakan Tuan Wen 1980 as a signature Chinese Peranakan culinary destination in the Glodok area.

Beyond just a business, Andrye hopes that the presence of Rumah Kue Peranakan Tuan Wen 1980 can help preserve the Chinese Peranakan culinary heritage, which is becoming less known to the younger generation. “I hope past memories can live again. Young people can also recognise that Indonesia possesses a unique and worthy-of-preservation Chinese Peranakan culinary wealth,” he concluded.
