From Gaza to Yemen: Empty Plates on World Food Day

Cairo (ANTARA) - On World Food Day, tens of millions of people in the Middle East continue to face severe food shortages as protracted wars, economic collapse, and mass displacement continue to paralysed local food production and supply chains. Recent data shows that more than 18 million people in Yemen and approximately 13.3 million people in Syria are experiencing food insecurity. The entire food system in Gaza has collapsed, leaving about 77 per cent of the enclave’s population facing high levels of acute food insecurity. Sudan has officially become the country with the largest famine and internal displacement crisis in the world. The United Nations (UN) has repeatedly called for increased funding and unhindered humanitarian access to prevent starvation, emphasising that without immediate action, millions more will be plunged into catastrophic famine in the Middle East.
